BCCI Takes Disciplinary Action Against Vaibhav and Tilak Varma

BCCI Takes Disciplinary Action Against Vaibhav and Tilak Varma

The on-field altercation involving India A batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the recently concluded Tri-Nation ODI series in Sri Lanka has now resulted in disciplinary action from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Vaibhav was involved in a heated exchange during the India A vs Sri Lanka A match after Sri Lankan player Halambage allegedly mocked him. Losing his composure, Vaibhav confronted the player and pushed him, with the incident quickly going viral on social media. His aggressive behavior drew criticism from fans and cricket experts alike.

BCCI Fined On Vaibhav & Tilak Varma

Following an investigation into the incident, the BCCI decided to impose disciplinary action. Based on the recommendation of match referee Jayaprakash, the Indian board fined Vaibhav by deducting 50 percent of his match fee for breaching the code of conduct.

Sri Lanka Cricket also took action against its players. Halambage was handed a 50 percent match fee fine, while senior player Niroshan Dickwella was penalized with a 20 percent deduction from his match fee for his role in the incident.

The BCCI also acted against India A captain Tilak Varma, who was involved in multiple arguments with the umpires during the match. For repeatedly disputing the umpires' decisions and violating the code of conduct, Tilak was fined 30 percent of his match fee.

The disciplinary measures indicate that the BCCI is committed to maintaining discipline on the field and is unwilling to support any player who breaches the game's code of conduct. The board reportedly reminded players that the purpose of touring Sri Lanka is to perform well in the series and focus on winning matches rather than getting involved in unnecessary confrontations.

The BCCI also advised young cricketers aspiring to break into the senior Indian team to concentrate solely on their performances and maintain professionalism on the field.

Will ICC any Action ?

It is worth noting that in regular international cricket, such disciplinary matters are usually handled by the International Cricket Council (ICC). However, since this was an India A vs Sri Lanka A series rather than an official ICC international series, the responsibility for disciplinary action rested with the respective national cricket boards. Had a similar incident occurred in an official international match, the ICC could have imposed much stricter sanctions.

As for the match itself, Sri Lanka A eventually emerged victorious after a thrilling contest, but the post-match controversy has continued to dominate headlines even after the final result.
