The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced important updates regarding the IPL 2027 season, putting an end to speculation about the tournament's schedule and the possibility of increasing the number of matches.
According to BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, the board is planning to begin the next IPL season earlier than usual to cope with India's extreme summer heat and changing weather conditions. As per the proposed schedule, the tournament is expected to start on March 10, with the final scheduled for May 15.
Saikia also clarified that the number of matches will remain at 74, dismissing reports that the IPL could be expanded to 94 matches from next season.
Why Isn't the IPL Expanding to 94 Matches?
For several months, there had been widespread speculation that the IPL would feature more matches from 2027. However, Saikia explained that the BCCI has decided against expanding the tournament, primarily because of the availability of overseas players.
Most foreign cricketers have international commitments and bilateral series with their national teams during the year. Extending the IPL would make it difficult for many of them to participate throughout the tournament.
"We already have a dedicated two-month window for the IPL, which allows overseas players to stay for the entire season. If we extend the tournament further, it will become difficult for many foreign players to remain available. That is why we have decided to continue with the existing 74-match format," Saikia said.
Earlier Start to Beat the Summer Heat
The BCCI is also considering changes to the tournament calendar due to the increasingly harsh summer conditions across India. High temperatures and unexpected rainfall during the peak summer months have affected several matches in recent seasons. To minimize weather-related disruptions, the board plans to move the tournament forward by a couple of weeks.
Saikia said the revised schedule is being designed after considering local weather conditions and extreme heat in different parts of the country. The move is also intended to improve the experience for players, support staff, and spectators, many of whom have struggled with soaring temperatures during afternoon and evening matches.
Focus on Better Tournament Planning
With these decisions, the BCCI aims to ensure smoother tournament operations while maintaining the current format. Although the IPL will begin earlier, the board has made it clear that there are no plans to increase the number of matches for the 2027 season.
The revised schedule is expected to help reduce the impact of extreme weather while allowing overseas players to remain available throughout the competition, ensuring another successful edition of the world's biggest T20 league.
