Jaffer boasts an outstanding record in domestic cricket. He holds the distinction of being the highest run-scorer in Ranji Trophy history and has also scored the most centuries in the competition. In first-class cricket, he played 260 matches, scoring 19,410 runs and 57 centuries. He maintained a batting average of over 50, placing him among the leading performers in the format.

Jaffer made his senior cricket debut for Mumbai during the 1996–97 season. He later represented Vidarbha before retiring from all formats of cricket. His extensive experience in domestic cricket could prove to be a major advantage in his bid for the selector’s position.

If Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjpe, members of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), select Jaffer, he could become the chief selector, as he has played the most Test matches among the current candidates. Jaffer represented India in 31 Tests, while another candidate, Pragyan Ojha, played 24 Tests for the country.

The current selection committee includes Pragyan Ojha, RP Singh, Ajay Ratra and Siva Sundar Das.
