Team India is currently on tours of Ireland and England, and the BCCI has announced squads for both series. However, the squad selected for the ODI series against England has drawn criticism. In particular, several former cricketers have questioned the decision to leave out Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar expressed his displeasure with the selection committee's decision. He questioned why Jaiswal had been sidelined and asked whether the selectors were giving more importance to a player's star status than to the team's long-term interests. His remarks have now become a major talking point in cricket circles.
Will Rohit Sharma Play the 2027 World Cup?
Criticizing the selection committee, Manjrekar said that the selectors should clearly explain the basis on which Rohit Sharma has been chosen. If Rohit has been included in the team, they should clarify whether he is expected to play in the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
Otherwise, Manjrekar argued, the selectors should explain why a young player like Jaiswal is being left out. He stated that if Rohit is not going to play in the 2027 World Cup, then this selection decision makes little sense. He added that everyone is aware of the culture surrounding star players in Indian cricket, and if selections are being made primarily because of a player's star tag, it would not benefit Team India.
Jaiswal Deserves More Opportunities
Manjrekar pointed out that Jaiswal has been performing exceptionally well in recent times and has made the most of every opportunity he has received. He also performed impressively in the previous series. Given this, Manjrekar said it is unfair to drop him from the team at this stage.
He emphasized that Jaiswal is a player for the future and should be given more opportunities rather than being excluded. He urged the BCCI to provide a proper explanation for the decision.
Focus on the Future, Not Just Star Players
Manjrekar also advised the team management to adopt a similar approach. He stressed that young players should be given more opportunities with the future in mind rather than prioritizing established stars. According to him, only then can selectors determine which players are best suited for different formats of the game.
He urged that selections should be made for the benefit of the team rather than on the basis of star status. Manjrekar also highlighted the importance of carefully nurturing young talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He said that the youngster should be guided properly and encouraged to stay focused, avoiding unnecessary distractions.
Smiles and cheers all around for a Yashasvi Jaiswal special😌👏
