Currently, the craze for T20 leagues is at its peak around the world. As a result, almost every country is running its own T20 league. However, England started a different competition called The Hundred. With several T20 stars participating in the league, it has also become extremely popular. This led IPL franchise owners to acquire some of the teams.
In the recently concluded season, Manchester Originals, a team associated with Lucknow Super Giants, emerged as the champions. Now, another IPL franchise is reportedly looking to enter The Hundred. According to the latest reports, Bollywood superstar and Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan is preparing to make his mark in The Hundred tournament.
The Knight Riders Group, which already owns teams in various cricket leagues around the world, is now reportedly focusing on the prestigious tournament organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
With the possibility of The Hundred expanding in the future, Shah Rukh Khan is said to be interested in acquiring a new franchise. In fact, KKR had previously attempted to buy the Trent Rockets before the tournament, but the deal did not go through because the asking price was considered too high. Now, the franchise is reportedly showing renewed interest in the opportunity.
Currently, IPL franchise owners already control four of the eight teams in The Hundred. Therefore, KKR could potentially become the fifth IPL franchise to enter the competition.
Meanwhile, the organizers are reportedly considering expanding The Hundred beyond its current eight teams. If the league is expanded, reports suggest that the Knight Riders Group could look to acquire a team based in areas such as Durham or Bristol/Taunton.
It remains to be seen whether KKR will eventually secure a team in The Hundred. If KKR does enter the tournament, it could further increase the league's popularity and global appeal.
