India suffered a shocking defeat against the West Indies in the second T20 match at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi. Batting first, India posted a massive total of 249 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. However, Indian bowlers and fielders failed to contain the opposition. As a result, the West Indies chased down the target, scoring 252 runs in just 18.3 overs to secure victory. With this defeat, an unwanted record was added to the name of Indian captain Shreyas Iyer.

A Rare and Unwanted Record

According to the report, Shreyas Iyer has become the first captain in T20 cricket history to suffer defeat on three occasions despite his team scoring more than 240 runs.

In the IPL, Iyer failed to defend a target of 261 runs while captaining the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. In 2025, when he was leading the Punjab Kings, the opposition successfully chased down a target of 245 runs. Now, with India losing despite scoring 249 runs, Iyer has added another instance to this unwanted list.

A Record for Team India, Too

The defeat in Ranchi also marked a significant moment in India's T20 International cricket statistics. For the first time in T20I history, India lost a match after scoring more than 225 runs.

Moreover, India conceded more than 250 runs for the first time in a T20 International match on home soil. Despite posting a massive total, failures in the bowling and fielding departments severely damaged the team's chances of winning.

Negative Records Under Iyer's Captaincy?

The report highlights several negative statistics relating to India's T20 performances under Shreyas Iyer's leadership. These include suffering a first-ever defeat against Ireland in an international match and series, as well as failing to win five, six, and seven consecutive T20 International matches.

In addition, the report mentions several other unwanted records, including India's first-ever T20I defeat by a margin of more than 100 runs, a massive 125-run loss, and being bowled out for just 76 runs.

Other setbacks cited in the report include losing the T20I No. 1 ranking after holding it for 1,605 days, losing a T20 series against England for the first time in 12 years, and losing two consecutive T20 series for the first time in seven years.

The report suggests that India's recent results represent a significant change compared with the team's previous performances. Between January 2024 and May 2026, India played 61 T20 International matches and lost just seven of them. However, in the following four months alone, India played 18 matches and suffered seven defeats.
