CA Sets Major Limits for IPL Owners

Private investment in the Big Bash League (BBL) has now become a hot topic. At a time when this appeared to be a golden opportunity for IPL owners, Cricket Australia has dropped another bombshell. It has made it clear that although it is open to private investment in the league, it will not hand over complete control to foreign companies. All major decisions and powers will remain within its own jurisdiction.

This could make things somewhat difficult for IPL owners. Their involvement may be limited to a relatively small investment, primarily as an opportunity to expand their business.

The main reason for this appears to be the stance of Australia’s state cricket associations. Cricket New South Wales, in particular, is reportedly strongly opposed to private investment. It argues that if control of the league is handed over to foreign investors, the state associations could lose their influence and even their relevance. As a result, other state boards are also approaching the issue cautiously.

This has become a major challenge for Cricket Australia. While CA is looking to expand its cricketing empire, such obstacles could turn into a headache for the governing body.

At the same time, Cricket Australia has clarified its position and dismissed some of the speculation surrounding the issue. It said that the entry of Indian companies is being viewed purely as a business opportunity. However, it also stressed that the organisation must proceed cautiously when faced with such concerns.

Cricket Australia has further made it clear that it will retain complete control over key matters such as the international cricket calendar, player availability and salary caps.
