England cricket has found itself at the centre of an ICC investigation after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) released a dressing-room video of Ben Stokes announcing his retirement from international cricket during the ongoing third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.
According to reports, Stokes informed his teammates of his decision before the start of play on Day 4, and the emotional speech was filmed by the ECB media team. However, the footage was published on social media and shared with broadcasters while the match was still in progress, prompting the International Cricket Council (ICC) to contact the ECB over a possible breach of its Players' and Match Officials' Areas (PMOA) regulations.
The ICC's regulations prohibit the use of recording equipment inside team dressing rooms for broadcasting purposes and do not allow such footage to be released during live match play. The governing body has reportedly written to the ECB seeking an explanation, with any punishment expected to be limited to a warning or financial penalty rather than severe disciplinary action. Stokes himself is not believed to have been responsible for the video's release.
A Glittering Career Overshadowed by Off-Field Controversies
Ben Stokes retires as one of England's greatest-ever all-rounders and one of the defining cricketers of his generation. During a 15-year international career, he played a pivotal role in England's 2019 ODI World Cup triumph, the 2022 T20 World Cup victory, memorable Ashes campaigns, and served as England's Test captain, leading the team through a new era of aggressive cricket.
Despite his extraordinary achievements on the field, Stokes' career was not without controversy. In 2017, he faced legal proceedings following a street altercation in Bristol, although he was later acquitted. Throughout his career, he also dealt with injuries, disciplinary issues and intense media scrutiny, making headlines for reasons beyond cricket on several occasions.
Now, even as he prepares to end his international career, Stokes has once again found himself linked to controversy—this time because of the timing and manner in which his retirement announcement was made public. While the retirement itself remains unaffected, the ECB's handling of the video has sparked debate and drawn the attention of the ICC.
