Another legendary coach has stepped down from an IPL franchise. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming has ended his remarkable 18-year association with the franchise. Reports suggest that the decision comes in the wake of the team's disappointing performances in recent seasons. CSK have failed to perform up to expectations over the last three IPL campaigns and were unable to qualify for the playoffs, prompting both the franchise management and Fleming to mutually agree to part ways.
From Player to One of IPL's Greatest Coaches
Stephen Fleming was part of the CSK squad as a player during the inaugural IPL season in 2008. A year later, in 2009, he took over as the team's head coach. Since then, he has played a pivotal role in shaping CSK into one of the most successful franchises in IPL history.
Under Fleming's leadership, Chennai Super Kings won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies. The franchise also qualified for the IPL playoffs 12 times and reached the final on 10 occasions, making it one of the most consistent teams in the tournament's history.
However, CSK have struggled over the last three seasons. After winning their most recent IPL title in 2023, the team failed to maintain the same standards and slipped down the points table. Their inability to put up competitive performances reportedly prompted the management to consider major changes, including appointing a new head coach. Fleming is also said to have agreed that it was the right time for a change, making the transition smoother.
Fleming Reflects on His Journey
Reacting to his departure, Stephen Fleming expressed gratitude for his long stint with the franchise.
"Eighteen years in sport is almost a lifetime. I leave this team with nothing but gratitude. CSK played some incredible cricket during my tenure, and the time I spent here has been one of the most rewarding phases of my career. I am extremely proud of everything we achieved together. We celebrated many victories and also overcame several difficult moments. These memories will stay with me forever," Fleming said.
Who Will Replace Fleming?
CSK have endured a difficult phase over the past three seasons after years of sustained success. The absence of MS Dhoni's consistent presence has also been felt, and the franchise is now looking to rebuild for the future. As part of that process, the management has reportedly decided to make a change in the coaching setup.
Meanwhile, speculation is growing over Fleming's successor. According to reports, Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani has emerged as a leading contender to take over as Chennai Super Kings' next head coach.
